Some local winemakers might joke about it being wine’s best-kept secret, but we’ve long known about the pedigree of the wines being made in Hawkes Bay. In this dozen, enjoy a gloriously savoury Syrah and a complex, aged Chardonnay both from Hawkes Bay, and both from the ranks of New Zealand’s finest winemakers, but we've sworn not to release further details.

There’s a reason this is a “Syrah” rather than a “Shiraz”. Hawkes Bay versions tend to draw comparison with the reds of the northern Rhone Valley, and so you can breath in a mass of white pepper on the nose, hints of tomato bush, brambles and meaty pan juices. The palate is super savoury too, drenched in more pepper and offset a little by notes of tart blueberry amid a silky, welcoming texture.

In the case of the Chardonnay from the 2014 vintage that is increasingly spoken of as among the finest of recent years. White wines often get overlooked in discussions over cellaring potential, but Hawkes Bay Chardonnay has the depth of character to grow old gracefully, thanks to those elevated levels of acidity (and naturally thicker grape skins).
