In Spain, lovers of mature Rioja will recognise the red berry and oak character of a terrific value, Gold-winning Gran Selección gem from Valencia. Winemaker Marta Martínez selects the finest, hand harvested Tempranillo grapes – from 50-year-old vines – for this regularly Gold-winning release, ageing the wine for three years in oak barrels. A wonderfully fragrant, silky red with mature redcurrant and strawberry fruit and a rich, toasty character, it’s excellent with roast lamb or tapas.
Using ripe and intense Shiraz and Grenache grapes grown on the craggy hillsides of the Languedoc-Roussillon in France's deep south, Hervé Sabardeil, crafts seductive and velvety Rex Mundi. This is a land of full-flavoured reds and legends. Looming over the vineyards, ancient castle ruins are perched on rocky peaks – ancient strongholds that were once home to medieval Cathars who feared the evil god Rex Mundi (‘King of the World’).
Portugal’s Touriga Nacional is a key grape in port, but also makes gorgeous, fruit-rich table wines, like Vina do Fava, a two-time Gold-winning, 95pt red, barrel-aged to perfection. It's from Casa Ermelinda Freitas, an estate founded a century ago and proud to have been run by three generations of women. The highly awarded Leonor Freitas is in charge today, with her daughter, Joana, next in line. A decade ago the family bought Senhor Fava's vineyard, with its prized sandy soils. He'd always been one of their top growers, but wanted to retire, so they named this wine, made from its grapes, in his honour.
Since then, it's won a Trophy, and 34 Golds (including two Grand Golds and two Double Golds) in nine vintages and was listed as 'Best Portuguese wine' by UK newspaper, The Independent. You'll find rich flavours in every glass for an amazing price of $15.99 a bottle
