Bleasdale, still owned and tun by the Potts family has had 165 years of uninterrupted winemaking – and right now is at an all time high. Among many major awards, they’ve won the Jimmy Watson Trophy, Max Schubert Trophy, Halliday's Winemaker of the Year award the 2024 Halliday Wine Companion Awards 'Winery of the Year'. When first released Halliday suggested that this beautiful Langhorne Creek Syrah would need a year to relax and open up. It's had its 12 months and, Halliday is right again, it is drinking beautifully.

Here’s a treat from the beautiful Briar Ridge winery in the Hunter. This impressive estate is not only 5 red star-rated, but was in the top 12 Best Value wineries in the Halliday Companion 2024. It’s a velvety Merlot, elegant and refined, made with cool climate fruit to bring out the best of the variety, from estate vineyards in Wrattonbully in South Australia and Orange in NSW. Look forward to lovely dark plum notes, with evocative spice and leather notes, on a long, luscious finish. It’s wonderful match to a charcuterie platter.

A lavishly rich and grand Barossa Cabernet from ‘the birthplace of the Barossa' as Château Tanunda has been called. It was established in 1890 and is the site of some of the Valley’s first vines planted as well as its first winery. After falling into decline, John Geber, who has owned it since 1998, has restored both the impressive winery building and the estate’s reputation. It truly is grand. And so are its wines – taste this inky black and intense beauty and see. Lifted aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and vanilla are accompanied by vibrant, dark berry fruits on the palate. The finish is long with fine-grained tannins from eighteen months maturation in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barrels. The tannins are slowly softening thanks to time in bottle. Many 90+ scores, including 93pts from Sam Kim at Wine Orbit, "Offering excellent varietal purity, the bouquet shows blackcurrant, toasted spice, green olive and roasted nut aromas. It's equally satisfying on the palate delivering excellent weight and persistency, splendidly complemented by ripe fruit flavours with fine chalky tannins."

Michael Kane, Chief Winemaker at Knappstein has a love for wine, and travel that has led him to visit and work across the world – Burgundy, Champagne, Oregon, Napa and Central Otago, and he has crafted many award-winning wines for celebrated brands such as Devil’s Lair, Stella Bella and Wolf Blass. The team at Knappstein consider themselves guardians of the vines, most of which are in excess of 50 years. They adopt a minimal intervention approach in the vineyard with the aim to create wines of real personality and unique regionality while maintaining rigorous high standards of sustainability. Silky 70% Shiraz-30% Cabernet combination, with juicy flavours of plums, mulberries and blackcurrants melding with dark chocolate and mint-cream on the back palate. Elegant, medium-bodied style with firm tannins and a lingering finish.

Allegiance Wines was founded by Tim Cox, whose love of wine and allegiance to the grape has seen him create a range of outstanding (and critically acclaimed) wines from premium regions around the country. For him, it’s all about producing the highest quality wines from premium parcels of fruit he sources. This Reserve level Cabernet Sauvignon illustrates beautifully Coonawarra affinity for Cabernet. Sauvignon “…the bouquet has a touch of eucalypt forest-floor, violet and ginger…” Show judges and Sam Kim are fans too: “Exhibiting stunning fruit purity with elegant complexity, the wine shows blackcurrant, tobacco, cured meat and cedar characters on the nose.
