Beyond the Labels
Howard Vineyard’s top-tier Amos Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 leads a line-up of mouth-watering Cabernet Sauvignon, perfect for the cooler months ahead. Along with this 95pt cool-climate Cabernet, you’ll find an old-vine Barossa treasure that usually sells for $80 a bottle, a classic Coonawarra beauty and another 95pt wonder from one of the Yarra Valley’s leading winemakers.
A thoroughly appealing, fruit first Yarra Cab that has won 95pts twice and has been highlighted for its great value too. After 25 years of making wine for some of Australia’s most iconic wineries, Yarra Valley legend – Rob Dolan, made the decision to channel his passion and skill into his own label. Rob’s decades of friendships with the region's top growers gives them access to the premier vineyards of the Yarra Valley. The White Label is their flagship range, and the purple-hued Cabernet is dense with blueberry, dark cherry and mocha on a bed of fine tannins.
Picked from the oldest vines on Howard Vineyard's Adelaide Hills Mt Barker estate. The Cabernet was basket pressed and matured for 16 months in 60% new French oak. Only the best barrels were then selected for the Amos, Howard Vineyard's flagship Cabernet. Swirls of blackcurrant, mulberry and crème de cassis lift from the glass. Blackberries and black olives combine with hints of dark chocolate, freshly brewed coffee and leather to weave a refined flavour profile. Silky tannins lead to a long elegant finish. "savoury … refined ... Very good wine... 95pts" (Ned Goodwin MW, Halliday Wine Companion).
The vineyard reserved for the Gold-winning 96pt Château Tanunda 50 Year Old Vines Cabernet Sauvignon is located at the heart of the valley floor in Bethany – where the first village was settled in the Barossa Valley and the first vines in the Barossa Valley were planted. The grapes are destemmed, but not crushed, and spend seven days on their skins. This is followed by careful basket pressing and malolactic fermentation in a combination of new and seasoned French barriques prior to 18 months maturation. A vibrant nose of dark fruit, chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon aromas. An exotic and full-bodied palate driven by flavours of fruits of the forest, blackcurrant and a hint of savoury spice bound together by succulent fine-grained tannins. A wine of great length which will reward many years in the cellar. A multitude of high scores reflect the quality of this fine Cabernet.
Jim Brand was a deeply passionate Coonawarra winemaker and vigneron who was born into the third generation of an Australian winemaking dynasty. Today, the family continue Jim’s legacy by crafting premium Coonawarra wines which reflect Jim Brand's drive, passion and endless pursuit for quality. For their magnificent 96pt Cabernet, the fruit is grown next to the iconic Coonawarra-Penola railway line in a vineyard planted in the mid-1980s. Close to two years in French oak (30% new). "For me, one of the stars of this year’s releases and certainly, hands down, the top value offering ... Approachable, with spicy notes, mulberries, cassis, blackberries, mint and tobacco leaves – a really impressive example of Coonawarra supported by firm and abundant tannins... 96pts" (Ken Gargett, Winepilot).
