Spain is famous for its aged reds, and the Palacio del Conde Gran Selección 2015 from Valencia really impresses. The lavish Familia Martinez Bujanda Gran Reserva Rioja 2012 impresses even more!! Australia’s powerful reds are built to last too, as you’ll discover with beauties from Lake Breeze, John Quarisa, Kilikanoon and more. This is a truly impressive collection

Wine Summary
From Lake Breeze, Halliday Wine Companion's 'Best Value Winery of the Year 2022', the Bullant Shiraz is their entry-level offering but it delivers "extraordinary value" (Tony Love, Halliday Wine Companion). You have to feel for the vineyard workers who danced amongst the vines avoiding the menacing bull ants who resided there. And this Shiraz has just as much bite. It can partner a cheese plate equally as well as a rare fillet steak. "Deep ruby core, some purpling tints at the rim. Blackberries and bresaola on the nose. Dark fruits open the palate but morphs quickly into an earth and meat savoury tone. Good flow with supple tannins carrying it quite long into a slightly saline finish. Great value here... 90pts" (Stuart Knox, The Real Review). Drinking well now but will age gracefully for the remainder of the decade.

Wine Summary
As the late Spanish wine expert John Radford once wrote in Decanter, the tiny enclave of Campo de Borja is “the source of some of the best value wines from Spain, if not the world”. It remains true. Where else could you find such a mellow, complex, oak-aged red at this price? It’s made by our old friend Pamela Geddes at the 500-year-old Bodegas Ruberte. 60% of the wine is Garnacha from vines planted in 1958. They’re not as prolific these days, but the intensity of flavour in the grapes is impressive. The balance is Cabernet Sauvignon, which adds classic cassis character and structure to the spicy, raspberry-rich Garnacha. A rich, velvety-smooth, fragrant Spanish red with vanilla hints imparted by oak. A great choice with lamb or tapas.

Wine Summary
The irrepressible John Quarisa has been variously described as a “magician” and “a sorcerer” by Halliday. His wines do have a magic knack of winning Gold. His secret? Over 20 years of experience as a winemaker and wine judge – and a great attitude. As John says, “you just can’t take life too seriously”. Today, taste his 2020 vintage ‘Enchanted Tree’ Cabernet Sauvignon made from fruit selected. It's bright, juicy and rich, with delicious dark plum, blackcurrant, blackberry, and subtle herbal notes. It's full-flavoured and rounded, with fine and smooth tannins ... a little bit of magic in the glass!

Wine Summary
Gran Reserva Rioja really is one of the world’s truly great wine styles. Familia Martínez Bujanda is one of the finest bodegas in all Rioja, and this mellow, complex Gran Reserva is one of their top reds. In 1984, a century after they were founded, they completed a state-of-the-art winery, and since then the family have been winning worldwide acclaim for their wines. We were one of their first customers in 1984 and have kept close through the years. Alongside a high-tech vinification cellar, the winery includes two barrel halls that hold 11,000 casks, both of which are temperature and humidity-controlled, so the wine matures in optimum conditions. This fine red, made purely from estate-grown grapes (rare in Rioja), has aged really well. Perfect now – enjoy with game or roast lamb to show it off at its best.

This top Cabernet comes from a fifth-generation winemaker whose ancestors planted some of the first vines in South Australia in 1837. Halliday calls Leconfield “a distinguished estate with a proud history, long renowned for its Cabernet”. Look for mint-edged aromas of blackcurrant, dark plum and wild herbs on a beautifully balanced palate.

Wine Summary
Tapanappa was founded by Brian and Ann Croser in 2002. Through Tapanappa, Brian is continuing a career-long mission of producing unique ‘wines of terroir’ – matching the climate, soil and geology to the right varieties from Tapanappa's three distinguished sites in SA. "It's wonderfully complex and inviting on the nose with dark plum, olive, mixed spice and toasted almond characters, followed by a richly expressed palate offering excellent weight backed by silken texture and finely infused chalky tannins. Beautifully styled with classic structure as well as supple mouthfeel, finishing long and engaging" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit)
