93pt cassis, dark cherry and spice, great-value Coonawarra Cabernet from the outstanding Yalumba – “immediately appeals to the nose, showing blackcurrant, dark plum, clove, subtle tobacco, and assorted nut aromas. … sturdy yet balanced with a lengthy, delectable finish” (Wine Orbit)..
"Cassis, dark cherry and spice flavours hit the palate first, then some seriously grippy and textured tannins kick in and partner with bright acidity to deliver length and mouth-feel. 91pts” (Aaron Brasher, The Real Review).
Owned and run by the Hill-Smith family, Yalumba has a long commitment to quality and great vision in its selection of vineyard sites, new varieties and brands. It has always been a serious player at the top end of full-bodied Australian reds.
“Coonawarra is not beyond delivering annual idiosyncrasies,” as fifth-generation Yalumba proprietor Robert Hills-Smith noted wryly, talking to the Australian's John Lehmann. “We've been working this vineyard for a long, long time, and every year, we learn more about the behaviour of the vineyard and its idiosyncrasies. It's meticulous viticultural husbandry, I would call it, the team that have been looking after that vineyard have really been solid. They know its personality, they understand the seasons, and we don't compromise down there.” John notes: "Savour the deep purple colour and then the complex nose delivering blackberry and blackcurrant, mint but also earthy notes with black tea. The palate balances its grippy tannins with blackberry and cassis flavours for a silky texture and an earthy, savoury finish. Would be delicious with a slow cooked lamb shoulder."93pt cassis, dark cherry and spice, great-value Coonawarra Cabernet from the outstanding Yalumba – “immediately appeals to the nose, showing blackcurrant, dark plum, clove, subtle tobacco, and assorted nut aromas. … sturdy yet balanced with a lengthy, delectable finish” (Wine Orbit)..
