The Wine
Originally created in 1989, Coonawarra’s Five Star Penley estate is a fusion of two great wine families – the Penfold and Tolleys. Today, sisters Ang and Bec are in charge and with the exceptional Kate Goodman leading the winemaking team quality has never been higher, as this complex Cabernet demonstrates. “It carries a sweet, toffeed warmth which, in the context of the wine’s flamboyant display of dark chocolate and ground coffee flavours, doesn’t seem out of place. Both balance and freshness have been tweaked in quality’s favour, and tannin has a sweet, ripe sense of control to it ... 94 points” (Halliday).
