The Wine
Last vintage, this velvety red scooped three top Golds. The twice Gold-winning 2016 is certainly of equal standing. It is made in the classic southern Rhône style and its impressive richness is partly due to the same remarkable 'pudding stones' you find in the vineyards of Châteauneuf. They absorb heat by day and release it at night, helping grapes to optimum ripeness. The 2016 is Vianney Castan's second vintage and it turned out to be perfect for Grenache. His estate is perfectly situated between Nîmes and Arles, with excellent terroir for its 50 hectares of vines and 7 hectares of olive trees. The 13th century property was once famous for its hunting and a favourite haunt of King Louis IX. Decant before serving with grilled red meats or a beef casserole.
