“Riesling is a star … one of my great wine heroes” says Jancis Robinson MW. She’s not alone! See why so many wine critics nominate premium Rieslings like these as their favourite white varietal.
Taste lovely lime-spiked Clare Valley beauties from top estate stars including Kilikanoon, Claymore, and Knappstein, and savour the cool elegance of Sorby Adams’s Eden Valley Jellicoe delight and the divine Dandelion Vineyards Enchanted Garden of the Eden Valley Riesling. These are pure magic in a bottle.
Planted in 1910, the Enchanted Garden is a thriving seven acre vineyard wonderland in the beautiful Eden Valley. Whole bunches of Riesling were hand picked in the second week of March, before destemming and fermenting in tank to produce a beguiling bone-dry Riesling with only 11% alcohol. Fresh on the nose with crisp red apples, sweet florals and aromatic musk, with top notes of citrus, blossom, orange and lime. Mineral salts, sea asparagus, slate and alpine river water run along a robust acid line to a long finish. "Pale and youthful in the glass, with some lovely green hints to it. Aromas of citrus pith, talc, jasmine and lily. The palate is fine and delicate, lemony citrus and a bath salts minerality. Long and fine: archetypal Eden Valley riesling... 92pts" (Aaron Brasher, The Real Review).
High points galore and Gold. Knappstein is a famous name in the Clare Valley, and the estate has some wonderful mature vineyards to draw upon for its impressive wines. The zesty, lime juice Rieslings are a particular specialty of Knappstein, as you would expect of a winery from this world famous Riesling region! Made with estate vineyards from vines between 10 and 30 years old, it's a scintillating and zingy treat. A perfect match to fresh oysters. “The palate tingles with energy and acidity around a core bursting with flavour. This offers a lot for its price point, ” (Gabrielle Poy, The Real Review).
The Clare Valley's dynamic Claymore Wines celebrates a love of wine, music and football (of the round ball type). Their labels celebrate some of the winemaker's favourite albums and songs. "This label, true to its musical roots, represents a regional collaboration with local Clare Valley grape grower partners to showcase our region's Queen at its best. This regional blend comprises selected parcels from both our Estate Watervale Riesling vineyards along with parcels from Auburn and Sevenhill." A delicious Riesling that's won Gold and 94pts. "Youthfully charming and elegantly fragrant, the bouquet shows Gala apple, lemon zest and white floral aromas, followed by a juicy palate offering bright fruit flavours with fine texture and firm acidity, finishing refreshing and lingering" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
It has been 90+ score after 90+ score for the 2022 vintage of Jellicoe Eden Valley Riesling. A concentrated palate with lime, sorbet and crunchy apple flavours. Serve chilled with barbequed scallops or King George Whiting. "Focused, true … lovely to drink" writes Dave Brookes in the Halliday Wine Companion. Sam Kim from Wine Orbit also gives it 95pts, calling it "… elegant, the wine shows lemon sorbet, lime cordial and crunchy apple nuances on the nose, leading to a concentrated palate displaying fine texture and stunning persistency. Superbly structured and lingering."
“The 2022 Mort's Reserve Riesling is an interesting wine! The acidity is green, with lime inflections, but it brings with it a succulence and intensity that spears through the very heart of the fruit. It has 11% alcohol, which addresses the acid query. When I am judging at shows, there is always one wine that gets a gold from me based on the level of uncomfortability of the acid—this would get that medal. I give these because they indicate the wine will age prodigiously, and while it may not be easy drinking in the short term, it suggests a longevity that will hold it in very good stead. Lean, austere, tight and focused, it's like a spear head in flight. It almost whistles with its pace. Don't drink it this year or next. Note the drinking window.” Erin Larkin The Wine Advocate
Another Clare Valley cracker from the Watervale sub-region. Bright and juicy single vineyard Riesling brimming with zesty lemon characters and pink grapefruit with hints of orange blossom and lemongrass. Well balanced and super refreshing. It received 94pts and a red star for exceptional value from Mike Bennie at the Halliday Wine Companion, who notes it is," … loaded with tart, lemony citrus" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit loves its "brilliantly focused palate displaying poise and linear mouthfeel. Captivating and engaging. 96pts"., while Gabrielle Poy in The Real Review sums it up by saying "This is beautifully balanced with crystalline precision. 95pts".
