Beyond the Labels
We’re rightly proud of our long list of delicious, popular exclusives. They represent our long-lived relationships with great Aussie producers – AND the greatest way of securing unbeatable, remarkable value for you. These six prime examples include David Joeky’s Top Trophy Dark Corner Durif Shiraz and lavish pure Shiraz in Kevin Mitchell’s bestselling Baroota, and Gold-medal Good Shiraz from RedHeads. Then, Double Gold Coonawarra Cabernet from Leconfield joins Gold-medal Loaded Barrels Shiraz Cab and McLaren Vale’s plush Black Pig Merlot. Buy 6 for a mere $14.49 a bottle and save $52. You’re welcome! (But consider whether 6 will be enough, think about the Dozen – but our top tip though has to be our BIG Exclusives Bulk Deal – massive saving, free bottle, free magnum... check it out).
David Joeky marries deep, black Durif and smooth spicy Shiraz to produce a darker, denser, profound red. As he says: “Magical things happen when Shiraz and Durif come together” . His Dark Corner bears that out to delicious perfection. The result? It's almost as dark as the corner in which it was made, a wine to stain your palate, and once tasted, you’ll be hooked. Ripe and mouthfilling, with blackberry, plum berry fruit and mocha flavours with a smooth, creamy texture.
Black Pig fans need no introduction to the rich, opulent wines from this legendary range. They're made from top quality McLaren Vale fruit – and it shows in the ripe and velvety Black Pig Merlot. Dark fruits bounce out of the glass with fresh – almost jammy – plum, blackberry and cherry. Vanilla, spice and herbal hints throughout. The palate is generous and well rounded. Grilled lamb cutlets with a side of mash and cranberry jam would go quite nicely alongside.
Crafted by the great Kevin Mitchell at Kilikanoon, who is famous for his outstanding Shiraz. His wines have regularly achieved a huge 98 points from Robert Parker and his top Shiraz sells for over $500 a bottle! Baroota is a 'special project' red, grapes selected from a number of top, early ripening vineyards between premium areas Spencer Gulf and the Flinders Ranges. Vinified in small batches. Enjoy aromas of blackberry with a sweet oak and vanilla lift, plus highlights of spice and eucalyptus. The intense, warming palate is loaded with dense black fruit, and smooth tannins carry the Shiraz to a delightfully long rich finish. It’s best decanted, then served with a rib eye steak or roasted eggplant.
This top Cabernet comes from a fifth-generation winemaker whose ancestors planted some of the first vines in South Australia in 1837. Halliday calls Leconfield “a distinguished estate with a proud history, long renowned for its Cabernet” . Look for mint-edged aromas of blackcurrant, dark plum and wild herbs on a beautifully balanced palate.
Carefully selected, perfectly ripened parcels of Shiraz and Cabernet from the Limestone Coast were brought together in this fully loaded red. Loaded to the gunwales with an abundance of varietal character, including aromas of red and black fruits, herbs and spices that precede a finely textured, robust mid-palate which is the result of fine fruit quality and careful maturation. The palate finishes long with enough tannin to reward those who have the patience to park the wine in a cool cellar for a few more years. Get out the big glasses for this!
20 years ago, a lightbulb moment resulted in the creation of RedHeads by Tony and Tom Laithwaite. It was a no-gimmicks, no-rules cellar where young, talented (and rebellious) winemakers could moonlight and make small-batch wines that really rocked their boat. Growers started bringing in pick-up loads of their best grapes they wanted 'rescuing' from the mega-blends. RedHeads winemakers began to gain a reputation as the ‘Robinhood of grapes’ – saving parcels to make into handcrafted wines. So popular, the cellar outgrew its original home and, for a few years, it moved from shed to shed. Finally it bought its own vineyard and built a state-of-the-art, off-grid, solar-powered eco winery. RedHeads by name, green by nature, with awards galore.
