Beyond the Labels

South Australia is such a great hunting ground for rich, classy reds – as this dozen displays in spades. Langhorne Creek’s Bleasdale Vineyards has scooped Halliday Winemaker, Winery of the Year and Best Cabernet Sauvignon awards in recent years, plus the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy. They are riding high, and you can taste the results today with their very attractive 93pt, plum-and-pepper-laced Generations Shiraz. There’s a second luscious Shiraz in the pack, from Fleurieu, plus a Shiraz Cab combo loaded with black fruit flavour. Straight Cabernet comes in the Double Gold-winning shape of the always excellent Chapel Hill’s The Prophet. A visit from McLaren Vale’s Black Pig is always welcome, and here the pig delivers a velvety and generously rich Merlot. McLaren Vale is also home to some of Australia’s finest Grenache – as Thistledown’s aptly named 92pt Gorgeous Grenache illustrates perfectly. Save $158 on the dozen.

Wine Summary
Black Pig fans need no introduction to the rich, opulent wines from this legendary range. They're made from top quality McLaren Vale fruit – and it shows in the ripe and velvety Black Pig Merlot. Dark fruits bounce out of the glass with fresh – almost jammy – plum, blackberry and cherry. Vanilla, spice and herbal hints throughout. The palate is generous and well rounded. Grilled lamb cutlets with a side of mash and cranberry jam would go quite nicely alongside.

Wine Summary
Michael Fragos grew up in McLaren Vale, and spent 14 years at Tatachilla before taking over at Chapel Hill in 2004. A three-time ‘Bushing King’, Michael has also been named best winemaker on the planet! James Halliday notes that his “wine quality is unfailingly excellent” . This one has an expressive nose of blackcurrant, bay leaf cigar box and chocolate. The palate is medium to full-bodied, beautifully structured, with a powerful complexity, fine-grained tannins, velvety texture and long, long finish.

Wine Summary
From a new wave of excellent winemakers focused on elevating the virtues of this vastly under-rated variety. Sourced from a number of old vineyards in the Riverland and McLaren Vale, some of which are dry grown bush vines. Aromatic and lifted on the nose with a beautifully layered, textural palate with wild strawberry and spice. Vinified in small batches, separately. Wild ferments, whole bunch inclusion, larger oak and no filtration or fining define the natural character of the wine. "... the aromas are dried herbs and spices, blackberry jam and a suggestion of burnt blackberry jam. There's a core of sweet ripe fruit and then a wash of drying tannins sweeps through. Bold, straightforward and very attractive" (Huon Hooke, The Real Review).

Wine Summary
The Fleurieu Peninsula is a diverse and exciting coastal region of South Australia. The loose sandy soil and cooling maritime breezes are perfect for growing savoury, aromatic Shiraz with great fruit intensity. Made using traditional techniques, with the aim of expressing our unique microclimate, this is a fresh, lightly oaked Shiraz with a vibrant, generous mid-palate that finishes uninterrupted and long. A great 'food wine' in its youth and with careful cellaring it will mature well over the next 3-5 years.

Wine Summary
Scoring 91pts at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show, Bleasdale’s classic Generations Shiraz is bang for your buck whichever way you turn. Rich Langhorne Creek fruit, with 22% spending 12 months in new oak. Dark plums and milk chocolate on the nose, with hints of blackberry and cracked pepper. Concentrated fruit flavours on the palate – plum and bramble and hints of vanilla. Vibrant fruit encased in a soft, velvety envelope. With its "moreish and sophisticated" (Halliday) finish, it's perfectly proportioned, a pleasure to drink. . Another triumph from Halliday's Winery of the Year 2024!

Wine Summary
Carefully selected, perfectly ripened parcels of Shiraz and Cabernet from the Limestone Coast were brought together in this fully loaded red. Loaded to the gunwales with an abundance of varietal character, including aromas of red and black fruits, herbs and spices that precede a finely textured, robust mid-palate which is the result of fine fruit quality and careful maturation. The palate finishes long with enough tannin to reward those who have the patience to park the wine in a cool cellar for a few more years. Get out the big glasses for this!
