Enjoy a dozen flamboyant reds that manage to capture the incredible character and fiery spirit of magnificent Spain. These are amazing! There’s Rioja, of course, both from top estates, and a marvellous Monastrell (Mataro) from the cult Jumilla region. Enjoy also a spicy, berry-rich Garnacha from Navarra, and another from Aragon and a bodega that Jancis Robinson has called an “exciting newcomer”. Last, you’ve the velvety Twelve Giants Merlot which, amazingly, is bottled in a paper bottle! Try them all here and enjoy impressive $116 savings into the bargain.
Such a modest price for old-vine Tempranillo from the superior Alavesa region, you can understand the popularity of this delicious Rioja. It's a contemporary, fruit-driven red, and the talent behind it is the infectiously keen Javier Murúa. His father Julián owns Bodegas Muriel (a winery Julián's father established in 1926) in Rioja’s superior Alavesa. We’ve known the family well for years now, so much so that Javier calls us up after the vintage so we can get the top pick on their finest vats. With its easy going, ripe red berry flavours and fragrant vanilla character, this supple Rioja is great on its own or with grilled meats or tapas.
This is an intensely flavoured, weighty red, similar in style to the rich, powerful and highly sought after reds of Priorat. The big difference, however, is the price – a fraction of that asked for Priorat wines. It was made at the Padró family cellar, founded in 1898, which draws on the expertise of winemaker Mario García. He has had experience throughout Spain (including Priorat, Montsant and Penedès), and has achieved many 5-Star ratings from top wine guide Guía Peñín. Combining concentrated, old bush vine (up to 70 years old) Monastrell (known to us as Mourvèdre or Mataro) plus a portion of strawberry-scented Tempranillo, it’s a lavish and layered wine that’s really hard to resist. It's a brilliant partner to grilled meats, or pair it with your next tapas feast. Delicious!
It’s back, and better than ever! We’ve been holding onto the sweet memory of this juicy, dark Spanish Garnacha for years. Back in the 1990s it was one of Tony Laithwaite’s favourite wines, and our customers loved it too. Today it’s made by Bodegas Raíces Ibérica, which was set up by Mark Schiettekat in 2020. Starting up as a local wine merchant (from his garage) in Aragón in the 1990s, Mark has come a long way and has been impressing the critics as he goes. Master of Wine Jancis Robinson listed the bodega as one of Spain’s “exciting newcomers”. Winemaker Rubén Magallanes, a Garnacha fanatic, uses high-altitude, old-vine fruit, to ensure a freshness to the flavour-filled, sweetly spiced red. Juicy red fruits, notes of cocoa powder, spices and balsamic. It's a warming glass solo or with hearty dishes.
In the most northwesterly corner of Rioja, the flatter land starts rising up into soaring mountains. It's here you'll find the start of the Rioja Alta vineyards – a fine enclave of Spain’s greatest region. There extra altitude freshens as well as ripens grapes slowly to full flavoured perfection. Since most Riojas blend grapes from across the region you almost never see Rioja Alta on labels. In fact, there are only two villages permitted to add it. In one you'll find Juan Antonio Leza’s family winery, the cellar behind Castillo de Epifania. Every grape comes from their sleepy Rioja Alta village. Full of silky dark fruit and strawberry, this red has a delicious 'drink me' style, lovely on its own or with grilled meats or tasty tapas.
How's this for a conversation starter? Seriously delicious new Merlot in an eye-catching bottle made from ... recycled paper. Yes, really.Called Twelve Giants – an ode to the legend of Don Quixote and the famous 12 windmills of Castile – this new red will soon have guests talking. Pick up the bottle and the first thing everyone will notice is how little it weighs – because there's no glass involved. No glass means a six-times lower carbon footprint and as the UK's Daily Telegraph noted, the “featherlight bottle” makes it perfect for “bringing to picnics and festivals and on hikes or train journeys”. Just as exciting is the sensational wine inside. 100% smooth, plummy Merlot from the red soils of the Castro family’s vineyards in Castile, it’s deep ruby in colour, with ripe plum and gentle spice flavours. A “drink me now” wine that’s as at home with tapas as it is Friday night pizza.
Our Buyer, Jean-Marc, is passionate about Spanish wines and Hemingway’s novels. And he's certain Ernest Hemingway would have loved Alta Sada Garnacha - it's just the sort of wine he'd have chosen to drink in the bars of Pamplona. Jean-Marc ventured to one of NE Spain’s wildest wine regions to discover the ancient Garnacha vineyard behind this weighty red. There the average age of the vines is 70 years and some are a century old. Bodega de Sada winery is hardly known abroad yet makes amazing wines, thanks in part to winemaker María Eransus, who worked for years with the legendary Telmo Rodríguez – a top name in Spain. Packed with intense raspberry and cracked pepper flavours, Alta Sada is a perfect choice with chorizo and chickpea casserole.
