Shiraz lovers don’t miss your chance to stack the wine rack with these top favourite Shiraz stars at a tiny $13.99 a bottle. Bargain! Shiraz is a top favourite red variety, and when you taste these beauties, you’ll soon see why. Enjoy the mighty Gold-medal Black Pig McLaren Vale Shiraz, a gorgeous Gold-medal Barossa star from Mountadam and the powerful Patronus – another Gold-medal Barossa beast! The lavish Marauding Vintners Chairman Shiraz comes from Langhorne Creek, and you’ve a beautiful Fleurieu treat as well. Last, enjoy the lovely Steeple Block Shiraz, made with fruit from across South Australia. It’s deliciously intense.
The original black pig was named Tanuki. He was a cheeky little pork chop. So loved was he by his winemaking owner, it was only right we honoured this special pig with a wine of his own. Produced from hand-selected fruit from top McLaren Vale vineyards, The Black Pig Shiraz leaps from the glass with sumptuous, rich and ripe blackcurrant tones and vanilla snippets. Oozing lashings of cedar, ripe berries and hints of chocolate this stunning Gold-winning Shiraz is the kind of wine that can drink now with ease, or be laid down for another 8 or so years. Shiraz drinking perfection.
Shiraz is very much the hero of Australia’s Barossa Valley. Aussie winemaking legend Peter Lehmann once said “When God created Shiraz, he did so with the Barossa in mind.” Patronus comes from a plot of old vines where the amount of fruit is miserly, but the quality is lavish. This Reserve version is a dark, inky beast with ripe aromas of smoky blackberry, fruitcake, toasty oak and dark chocolate… a bigger, bolder and more mouthcoating version of the bestselling Patronus. Get out your biggest glasses for this outstanding Reserve Shiraz! An excellent choice with venison or lamb backstrap.
Located in the High Eden sub-region of the Barossa, Mountadam was originally established in 1972 by the late David Wynn for his winemaking son Adam. Since 2005, it has returned to being a family owned and run winery, with David and Jenni Brown overseeing its success. Quality has got better and better, and now with Caitlin Brown as chief winemaker, they have a very fine and deserved reputation indeed. High Eden’s chilly heights lead to harvests up to a month later than those in neighbouring Eden Valley. The result is gorgeous Shiraz like this, full of blue fruit and peppery acidity. “Wonderfully ripe and perfumed on the nose showing black/blueberry, violet, clove and spicy oak aromas, followed by a beautifully weighted palate offering fleshy texture and silky tannins. Upfront and delectably appealing… 93pts” (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
Black grape varieties are particular popular in South Australia, bathing in the Australian sun ensuring optimal ripeness. No more so than Shiraz – the most planted grape in the area. Deep and ripe in black fruit flavour, distinctive in its peppery spice qualities and with a long, moreish finish that will have you coming back for more. With blackberry, plum and fragrant spice, the Steeple Block Shiraz is made for sipping with fine fare like fillet steak or slow-cooked lamb shanks.
Those Marauding Vintners know exactly where to find the best wines and biggest characters! When they introduced us to Chairman Shiraz, customers loved him and he scooped Gold at his first appearance. Well, he's done it again this vintage, too, with Gold at Gilbert & Gaillard International: "Youthful, deep red colour. Intense nose of red fruit combined with a touch of woody minerality ... Enjoy with grilled meats" (show judges). As the back label will tell you, “the self-styled Chairman" is after all "the big man of Australian wine whose power is recognised and respected around the world. Power he might have in spades, but you can’t overlook the charm. Bring him to the table and he’s sure to win over the guests...” This is Langhorne Creek Shiraz with heft – ripe red and black fruit, spice and toasty oak persistence.
The Fleurieu Peninsula is a diverse and exciting coastal region of South Australia. The loose sandy soil and cooling maritime breezes are perfect for growing savoury, aromatic Shiraz with great fruit intensity. Made using traditional techniques, with the aim of expressing our unique microclimate, this is a fresh, lightly oaked Shiraz with a vibrant, generous mid-palate that finishes uninterrupted and long. A great 'food wine' in its youth and with careful cellaring it will mature well over the next 3-5 years.
