Enjoy a crisp but textural Pinot Grigio from coastal vineyards and seafood-friendly Vermentino. Fresh, peachy white, Lucido and the cherry-ripe red, Frappato are both made by Dino Taschetta, both Gold winners and both ‘made without(w/o) compromise from grape to glass’ and bottled in recycled glass. Dino also makes Tenuta Fenice from some of Italy’s oldest, highest Nero d’Avola vines, and lastly Di Prima is pure elegant Syrah.
In 1968 western Sicily was rocked by an earthquake. Such was the devastation, residents of Poggioreale had no choice but to abandon their properties and rebuild further down the hill. Whole settlements became ghost towns overnight. This included Dino’s grandfather’s Nero d’Avola vineyards. 50 years on, Dino set out to recover his grandfather’s lost plot of land. He found it wild and uncultivated, yet producing jewel-like grapes with amazing flavour. In 2017 he made his first ‘revived’ vintage which proved a sensation with customers. It's pure Nero d’Avola, a Sicilian grape, fast becoming a fashionable pick in smart restaurants. Dino’s creation is packed with rich black fruits and spice. A top choice with sausage casserole.
In 1958 in Sicily's town of Menfi, 68 winemakers signed a pact to preserve the island's vineyards and thereby a way of life. 60+ years later, this cooperative has been named 'Winery of the Year' twice – in 2018 by Vini d’Italia and 2017 by Germany’s Weinwirtschaft. It has also gained top marks in the renowned Gambero Rosso wine guide. With these credentials, its members were keen to export and came to us first. This is their Vermentino – a top white grape of Sardinia that also excels in Sicilian sunshine. The wine is named after the winemaker Andrea Palermo's grandfather, one of the 68 to sign the original pact and means 'land of my grandfather'. With pear, apple and zesty citrus, this is an appetising white. Top solo or great with seafood.
We first met Dino when he began restoring his grandfather's earthquake-struck vineyard, high in the Sicilian hills. You loved the wine it made _ Tenuta Fenice. Not one to sit back, he's started another ambitious new project called w/o - wine made without compromise. He first made a Frappato red, then a crisp rosato and now this rare white. It's made from Lucido (the best clone of the Catarratto grape), all grown organically thanks to Sicily's warm, dry climate and Dino's diligence. It's bottled in 100% recycled glass too, known as 'wild' glass. You may notice a little variation in colour, perhaps a few tiny bubbles. All part of the charm, as is the wine's herbal-scented peach fruit. Chill and sip with seafood and lighter dishes.

Not one to rest on his laurels, he's started another ambitious new project called w/o - wine made without compromise. He chose native Frappato as his champion, all grown organically thanks to Sicily's warm, dry climate and Dino's diligence. It's bottled in 100% recycled glass too, known as 'wild' glass. You may notice a little variation in colour, perhaps a few tiny bubbles. All part of the charm, as is the delicious red berry and cherry fruit that greets you on the aroma and continues through on the bright, juicy palate. Try chilled solo, or with pizza or pesto pasta.
Tim Atkin MW says Sicily is “now one of the most exciting wine regions in Europe, blessed with a combination of abundant sunshine, varied terroirs, good indigenous grapes.” Plus, it has the investment to make the most of these advantages. This gorgeous Syrah comes from David di Prima, whose grandfather Gaspare planted the vines decades ago. The vineyards lie on high hills overlooking the Lago Arancio (Orange Tree Lake) reservoir. Originally a river, it was dammed in the 1950s. On rare occasions the water level drops to reveal the ruins of a Moorish temple. With deep colour, cherry, spice and chocolate character, this Syrah goes well with grilled red meats and full-flavoured local dishes such as aubergine caponata or cucuzza squash bake.
Sicily is our top tip right now for flavour and value. You see, not only do the island's sparkling seas and rolling mountains make for seductive vistas, they also make for some delicious wine. Like this Don Pino, a seriously moreish organic Grillo (the white the locals usually keep for themselves). It's named after one of the oldest grape growers in Sicily’s Belice Valley, Don Pino. Each vintage Don Pino sends his grapes to the local village winery. But last year his grapes were so good, the head winemaker set them aside to make this special wine. Teasing with apple blossom, citrus, orchard fruits and herbal hints, this is a guaranteed hit for fans of Sauvignon or Pinot Grigio. We recommended enjoying it with fresh bruschetta or seafood.
