Wine Summary
As the late Spanish wine expert John Radford once wrote in Decanter, the tiny enclave of Campo de Borja is “the source of some of the best value wines from Spain, if not the world”. It remains true. Where else could you find such a mellow, complex, oak-aged red at this price? It’s made by our old friend Pamela Geddes at the 500-year-old Bodegas Ruberte. 60% of the wine is Garnacha from vines planted in 1958. They’re not as prolific these days, but the intensity of flavour in the grapes is impressive. The balance is Cabernet Sauvignon, which adds classic cassis character and structure to the spicy, raspberry-rich Garnacha. A rich, velvety-smooth, fragrant Spanish red with vanilla hints imparted by oak. A great choice with lamb or tapas.

Wine Summary
For five generations, the Castro family have been making exceptional red wines in the heart of Valdepeñas, central Spain. Their extensive vineyards lie at altitudes in excess of 700 metres, planted on poor, infertile soils and blessed with plenty of sunshine (2,500 hours a year). All ideal conditions for the production of great wine, with good colour and intensity. They pride themselves on their traditional methods, using here all Tempranillo, hand-harvested, fermented slowly, then aged at least 18 months in French and American oak barrels. The former lends subtle spice notes, while the latter offers more obvious coconut flavours. With 7 years age, it shows mellow red fruits, spice and oaky complexity. Great with tapas or grilled meats.

Wine Summary
Alvaro van Zeller’s family are most famous for starting the finest port house of all time, Quinta do Noval. But their talents don't stop there. Since moving on, Alvaro has become famous for establishing the reputation of Douro’s dry reds. Ones like this gorgeous 2019. Named after his grandmother, Baronesa combines the family’s two talents: darkly spiced Douro reds and fine port. Made from three top grapes and finished in old port barrels, this red offers lavish layers of richness. All the grapes are from the Van Zellers’ Douro vineyards, hand picked and gently pressed to extract their deep colour and floral aromas. Then 12 months in old oak barrels adds that dense spice, superb complexity and a long, velvety finish. Decant and enjoy slowly.

Wine Summary
Herdade de São Miguel is a family-owned estate, described by wineanorak’s Jamie Goode as “a new Portuguese star.” Having won over 500 Golds and earned 100 90+ scores in ten years, this winery is certainly living up to that star status. Their Segredos de São Miguel Reserva is a medley of Portugal’s most prized red grapes. Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez, Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira combine to form a sumptuously rich, well-balanced wine that’ll keep you coming back for more. First released in 2006 this Reserva has a history of high scores from critics, reaching above 90 almost every vintage. The 2019 received 91pts from Wine Enthusiast and a Gold. Laden with spiced black fruits and a long tobacco finish, it's spot on with a hearty stew.

Wine Summary
The supple, ripe Barón de Barbón has remained our bestselling Rioja for many years and loyal customers keep coming back for more. And at such a modest price for old-vine Tempranillo from the superior Alavesa region, you can’t fault its popularity! The Daily Express even claimed on its release that it’s “what true Rioja is all about.” The talent behind this contemporary, fruit driven red is the infectiously keen Javier Murúa. His father Julián owns Bodegas Muriel (a winery Julián's father established in 1926) in Rioja’s superior Alavesa. We’ve known the family well for years now, so much so that Javier calls us up after the vintage so we can get the top pick on their finest vats. With its easy going, ripe red berry flavours and fragrant vanilla character, this supple Rioja is great on its own or with grilled meats or tapas.

Wine Summary
Bodegas La Emperatriz first won prizes for its wines in 1878 when it belonged to Empress Eugénie of France. Today brothers Eduardo and Victor Hernáiz own the impressive estate, comprising 101 hectares lying at high altitudes in the Rioja Alta. They make superb wines – many have been awarded over 90 points by Wine Advocate. With extensive vineyards, they have the luxury of using only estate-grown grapes and make a range of top-ranking wines, but rarely a Gran Reserva purely from this single, north-facing vineyard lying at 630 metres. The result is very slow-ripening grapes and a wine with superb structure, depth and impressive complexity. Only now is it opening out, revealing all its layers of flavour. Silky red fruits, vanilla and oaky, coconut spice. Open early and enjoy with lamb.
