When it comes to wine, we really are a lucky country. Here’s another example of our fortunate life as wine lovers: an eight-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon, handmade by a quality third-generation producer in a world-class wine region. The 92pt Mitchell Clare Valley Cabernet 2015 extols the virtues of small-batch, minimal touch, sustainable family winemaking. The Cabernet fruit comes from vines which were planted in 1982 in a vineyard that literally surrounds the Mitchell family homestead and winery. Still looks youthful in the glass and shows off aromas of blackcurrant, plums, eucalypt, tomato leaf and hints of pine needles and leather. Lovely combination of fruit, oak, acidity and tannins on the palate. Perfect with beef bourguignon. Drinking beautifully now.
