Beyond the Labels
This sensational dozen of top-quality reds is simply overflowing with awards. And look at the fabulous gifts that come with it – a FREE Gold-medal red and 2 FREE Glasses together worth $69! Start with the really good RedHeads Good Shiraz with Gold & 92pts, then enjoy two stunning multi-Gold Cabernets, one from Allegiance Wines with four Gold & Double Gold, the other from Zonte’s Footstep with a straight FIVE Gold. Both have loads of high points as well. Then, delight in a very tempting Adelaide Hills Tempranillo from Colab & Bloom with Gold, the very suave Marauding Vintners Mr Noir Pinot Noir with Double Gold, and a classy Clare Shiraz Cabernet from the prestigious Knappstein Estate with two Gold. Wow!
Plush and silky cassis-rich Cabernet with a dash of red-berry Tempranillo – this is juicy, mouthfilling stuff. As the folk at Zonte’s Footstep like to say, they take their vineyards and their wines seriously, but not themselves. As per usual for Zonte’s Footstep, it’s a multi-medal-winner too. “Well proportioned and crafted for excellent drinking. ” (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit). "Succulent, juicy and delicious" (Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot).
For the Marauding Vintners, wine is not a commodity! For these guys, it’s where art and nature merge in an expression of people, place and time. They know where real wine is found, often well off the beaten track, and they devote time to tracking down the genuine characters. Meet the distinguished, enigmatic Mr. Noir. Despite rumours of a noble French background, you detect no trace of an accent nowadays. Once, mystery hung about him. A solitary, often elusive presence, held in reverence by a fiercely devoted band of followers. Their loyalty remains, their numbers have grown, but Mr. Noir now moves freely from place to place. Though still a singular character, the haunting mystique has evolved into bright charm, evident class – and the alluring ability to light up any room and occasion.
20 years ago, a lightbulb moment resulted in the creation of RedHeads by Tony and Tom Laithwaite. It was a no-gimmicks, no-rules cellar where young, talented (and rebellious) winemakers could moonlight and make small-batch wines that really rocked their boat. Growers started bringing in pick-up loads of their best grapes they wanted 'rescuing' from the mega-blends. RedHeads winemakers began to gain a reputation as the ‘Robinhood of grapes’ – saving parcels to make into handcrafted wines. So popular, the cellar outgrew its original home and, for a few years, it moved from shed to shed. Finally it bought its own vineyard and built a state-of-the-art, off-grid, solar-powered eco winery. RedHeads by name, green by nature, with awards galore.
Michael Kane, Chief Winemaker at Knappstein has a love for wine, and travel that has led him to visit and work across the world – Burgundy, Champagne, Oregon, Napa and Central Otago, and he has crafted many award-winning wines for celebrated brands such as Devil’s Lair, Stella Bella and Wolf Blass. The team at Knappstein consider themselves guardians of the vines, most of which are in excess of 50 years. They adopt a minimal intervention approach in the vineyard with the aim to create wines of real personality and unique regionality while maintaining rigorous high standards of sustainability. Silky 70% Shiraz-30% Cabernet combination, with juicy flavours of plums, mulberries and blackcurrants melding with dark chocolate and mint-cream on the back palate. Elegant, medium-bodied style with firm tannins and a lingering finish.
Juicy, smooth and oh-so-easy to drink, the 94pt Colab & Bloom Tempranillo smells of violets, ripe cherry and vanilla. On the palate there are nuances of dusty earth, rich red fruits, vanilla and sun-baked leather. Grown in David Blows' Macclesfield Vineyard in the picturesque Adelaide Hills. "Offering fabulous fruit purity and perfume, the wine shows sweet plum, blueberry, floral and subtle spice aromas, leading to a succulent palate that's plump and silky. Delightfully composed and expressed, making it comforting and immediately drinkable. At its best: now to 2028." (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
The Langhorne Creek region is one of South Australia’s oldest wine regions. Its history is littered with colourful characters, none more so than the region’s namesake, Alfred Langhorne, who earned the nickname 'The Liar’ for his extreme economy with the truth. Though he couldn't be trusted in business, he definitely had an eye for top-notch grape-growing areas. This rich, smooth beauty is honest proof – and it has just won a Double Gold medal in France to prove it!
Dedicated to the 'iron men who built the timber ships'. Allegiance Wines' owner Tim Cox took inspiration from his father Jim, a foreman shipwright who built and refitted many iconic Australian vessels, when creating The Foreman Coonawarra Cabernet. The 2020 vintage won the Trophy for Coonawarra Wine of the Year (CWSA Best Value 2021), and this 2021 vintage has followed it with a series of Gold (and Double Gold) wins internationally and at regional wine shows across Australia. The scores are high too; up to 95pts multiple times. Sourced from a single vineyard in the southern Coonawarra, The Cabernet expresses lifted blueberry and blackcurrant fruits, along with hints of violet and flowering thyme aromatics. The palate has fresh blue and dark berry fruit flavours, floral herb characters, along with hints of cocoa and cedary oak. Medium bodied, fine tannins and a persistent finish.
For pure practicality, these stemless glasses are the way to go. They're elegant without being pompous, and enduringly practical for all your drinking needs. Take them on a picnic, to a BBQ or just enjoy at home without the fear of easily knocking one over. The Dartington story begins in 1920, when the Dartington Hall Trust was founded to help struggling rural communities. Today, it's an award-winning organisation and the leading UK glass manufacturer, with workers who've been in the business for 40 years. You can rest assured your wine is in good hands!
