Beyond the Labels
These six slite whites are diverse in style and grape varieties. Thistledown’s Cloud Cuckooland combines Fiano and Zibibbo (fun to say and sip), “Chill and drink with gusto! Is this not the best apero in the country?” (Halliday). But you might opt for the “taut, wonderfully aromatic single-site Clare Valley Riesling” or Heirloom’s tropical fruit laced Sauvignon (both have Gold and 96pts). There’s lovely, lemony Picquepoul from Coriole, “flavourful Chardonnay of considerable pedigree” from d’Arenberg, and the new vintage of Jim Barry’s unique and consistently delicious Assyrtiko. You'll save $34, but combine these with our Elite Reds six and you'll not only save $207, but also receive a FREE Decanter from Dartington Crystal (worth $70).
Thistledown was started by friends Giles Cooke and Fergal TynanIn, who had met when studying for the Masters of Wine exams. In their fun-loving 92pt Thistledown Cloud Cuckoo Land, Italian varietals from the Riverland come together in harmony. A vibrant, textural white with hints of almond blossom, quince and ripe pear, it's tangy, almost exotic, but pithy and delicious. It makes a great aperitif – Ned Goodwin MW in The Halliday Wine Companion asks if it might be "the best in the country?".
Golden delight. A charmingly beautiful scent with peach, apricot, vanilla and white spices. Flavours of nectarine, apple, pear, citrus peel, white pepper and a touh of vanilla. A deft touch of old French oak adds extra complexity and a wonderfully rich and round mouthfeel. The name comes from the native Bearded Dragon lizards that often find their way into grapes destined for the winery, but fortunately are spared a terrible fate because of the gentleness of the grape crusher that allows them to scurry away to safety.
The exceptional 96pt, Gold-winning Gaelic Cemetery Celtic Farm Riesling only just missed out on a Trophy at the 2022 Clare Valley Wine Show, taking home a Gold instead. It's been a competitive year for the region's Riesling with the quality hitting outstanding levels – which you can experience in the Celtic Farm. Ken Gargett of Winepilot describes it as "absolutely cracking Clare Valley Riesling... This has poise, focus, drive and perhaps most especially, balance and length. 96pts"
In August 2006, while on holiday in Santorini, Greece with his wife Sue, Peter Barry tried his first glass of Assyrtiko. Fresh, crisp and delicious he knew this Greek variety would thrive back in Australia, where it was not only not grown, but totally unknown. He brought some back to the Clare Valley and in 2012 planted it “at our Lodge Hill Vineyard, a special and unique site treasured by my family and suited to this variety” Since its first vintage it’s won high points aplenty and rave reviews.
Gabriella Poy in The Real Review writes of this 2022 vintage: “A refreshing mix of Vietnamese mint, lemon pith and lime leaves on the nose. The palate is taut and chiselled, packed with tangy herbal and citrus fruits. Its angularity is fleshed out in the right places, leaving a salivating tail of acidity to finish. This is a tangy assyrtiko with many facets. 92pts.”
Coriole was the first winery in Australia to grow Piquepoul, and this lovely, crunchy 2023 vintage is the ninth release. The nose is spritely and fresh showing fresh lemon, cypress and white nectarine. The palate is fine and long with fresh acidity providing drive and texture, flavours of citrus blossom, jasmine flower and wet stone. High 93pt scores from many of Australia’s leading wine critics. “So much crunch and brine, with green apple, lemon zest and some floral top notes. It’s very stony and dry, but delivers a good amount of flavour, and the finish has some raw almond and grapefruity bite. Delightful thirst slaking wine… 93pts” (Gary Walsh, The Wine Front).
Yet another finely balanced – high scoring – Heirloom treasure meticulously crafted by leading light winemaker Elena Brooks (Halliday calls her “gifted” and we absolutely agree!). A lovely, bright, fruit-packed expression of Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc, best enjoyed with a seafood platter. Beautifully balanced by keen, razor-edge acidity. Bursting with flavours of passionfruit, apple and blackcurrant, lime zest and an overarching herbaceousness. As Huon Hooke writes for The Real Review, it boasts a "pale colour and an aroma of freshly cut radish. A sprinkle of talc, a dash of lemon. The wine is very light on the tongue, clean and crisp and fresh, and beautifully delicate. Very good current drinking... 90pts".
