Beyond the Labels
Distinguished, mature Shiraz comes in the form of Tahbilk’s “full and generous” 95pt Eric Purbrick 2017, and the intense, concentrated Patriarch 2016 from Mountadam’s High Eden vineyards. There is a succulent 93pt Sangiovese from Coriole and the “luscious, yet distinctly elegant” 95pt combo of Shiraz and Grenache from Dowie Doole. Elegant, sumptuous Château du Gazin is a Merlot-rich French beauty from Canon-Fronsac AOC, a tiny top-quality region from Bordeaux’s ‘Right Bank’, while Leconfield‘s 95pt Trophy-winner is a pure Merlot from Coonawarra. Both are exquisite with red meat dishes, especially lamb. We recommend decanting these last two. Incidentally, you'll save $103 on these six reds, but combine them with the Elite Whites and you'll also receive a FREE decanter (worth$70).
Located on the famous Right Bank alongside Saint-Émilion and Pomerol stands Château du Gazin. Since 1532 the château has been producing wines, but a new chapter began when the Robert family, originally from Burgundy, acquired the estate almost 90 years ago. The vineyards were revitalised and since 2018 the estate has been converting their wines to organic. Château du Gazin is from vineyards in the Canon-Fronsac. The appellation lies upon clay-limestone soils, similar to those found in Saint-Émilion, and is known for its big full-bodied reds. This 2018 is mostly Merlot with red berry Cabernet Franc and juicy Malbec. It shows dark berry fruit with hints of mocha and smoky oak. A beautiful pairing alongside braised beef or cheese.
Dowie Doole was founded in 1995 by Drew Dowie and Norm Doole, and grew under winemaker and managing director Chris Thomas. The estate has vineyards in two of McLaren Vale’s most prized sub-regions Blewitt Springs and Tatachilla and produces very impressive reds. <br><br>"… luscious, yet distinctly elegant“ says James Halliday. "The wine is rich and velvet-smooth, with lovely graceful line and harmony. Seamless flow across the tongue. Raspberry, licorice and blacker fruits on the palate, the tannins completing the picture superbly with the right amount of grip, supple and gently caressing. Lovely wine to drink now" comments Huon Hooke in The Real Review. To 2037.
Coriole's 2022 vintage entices with sweet cherries, vanilla and thyme on the nose, leading to a palate infused with cherry and raspberry flavours. Beautifully balanced, with savoury notes emerging as you linger. Medium-bodied; fine but firm tannins give the palate great length. A Sangiovese to fall in love with, from some of the oldest Sangiovese vines in Australia. Mushroom risotto an obvious pairing. "Mid to deep ruby and offers up expressive aromas of cherry liqueur, soy sauce and roasted meats with genuine power and complexity. Italian styling with a structural style, al dente tannins adding upfront impact... 93pts" (Andrew Caillard MW, The Vintage Journal).
d'Arenberg's The Dead Arm is true powerful, concentrated, age-worthy iconic Shiraz from McLaren Vale."Deep, dark, concentrated red/purple colour. The bouquet is tarry, meaty, powerful and ironstone-earthy, preserved plum, too. The palate is gutsy and full-bodied, rich and dense, with thick mouth-coating tannins, concentrated flavour and long persistence. The astringency is supported by generous flavour and the wine has long-term potential. Right now, it needs either a hearty steak meal or putting away in the cellar. A real thumper" (Huon Hooke, The Real Review). "Bravo! Forceful…" adds Ned Goodwin MW in The Halliday Wine Companion.
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit gives it 94pts "Wonderfully ripe and enticing, the wine shows blackberry, spicy oak, clove and rich floral aromas on the nose, followed by a concentrated palate that's juicy and refined. A gorgeously styled shiraz with seductive complexity, making it highly enjoyable." Tyson Stelzer approves of its "Spicy, ripe blueberry, blackberry and black plum" and gives it 92pts in the Halliday Wine Companion.
In 1974, Sydney Hamilton, who already had enjoyed a celebrated winemaking career, bought land in Coonawarra in order to produce classic Coonawarra Cabernet on the famed terra rossa soils here. He named his estate after an ancestor of his from England, Lord Leconfield, and did indeed build a huge reputation not only for his Cabernet Sauvignon, but Cabernet Franc and Merlot too. This outstanding 2021 release has won a Trophy, Gold and scores of 95 and 92. It's a delight. "Deep and bright red-purple colour, with a bouquet of humus and tobacco, a hint of green-olive, the palate full of sweet, ripe and quite luscious fruit, beautifully framed by fine tannins and impeccably balanced. Long carry; high cellaring potential. A cracking Merlot and great value for money" (Huon Hooke, The Real Review).
