Beyond the Labels
Margaret River, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale, Yarra Valley and the Limestone Coast are among the regions on display here. Highlights include the quadruple-Gold-winning Miles from Nowhere Best Blocks Cab, which includes a dash of Merlot and Cabernet Franc in a delicious and complex drop in which “Salted licorice and aniseed lace the blackberry fruit”. McLaren Vale’s Black Pig is on Double Gold form, as is Ravensthorpe from the fossil-rich soils of the Limestone Coast. McPherson’s The Full Fifteen is a rich, popular powerhouse as the name suggests, while Pettavel offers a vibrant Yarra Valley double whammy of Cab and Merlot.Value matches quality here, and you can enjoy them all for $14.99 a bottle, with a HUGE $130 SAVING!
With 3 vineyards across the most reputable wine regions including Geelong and Yarra Valley, Pettavel Wines has achieved many top ratings from James Halliday and other reviewers throughout the years. This wine showcases a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Cabernet Sauvignon enhances the tannins, acidity, and depth of the wine; the addition of Merlot guides it to become more supple and medium-bodied. Indulge in this complex and a layered red, with enticing aromas of black plum, black cherry, green pepper, blackberry, blackcurrant. Cellar for a few years or crack it open as soon as it lands on your doorstep.
This limited production, premium red is sourced from only the best blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon in the Margaret River. Wilyabrup is considered by many as the pinnacle sub-region within the Margaret River and the winemakers have been busy selecting only the best individual panels and rows from a low-yielding site in this very special place. Medium to full-bodied with a well-defined tannin structure. Plush fruits of cassis and dark berries, combined with a slight savoury layer of dried herbs. Well-balanced acidity and careful oak integration create a seamless wine with a lingering finish. Pair it with braised beef short ribs with creamy mashed potatoes and roasted root vegetables.
The Full Fifteen is a powerful customer favourite boasting plenty of reviews. Andrew McPherson, or ‘Big Mac’ to friends, launched this mighty Aussie red in 2003. It was an instant hit with customers and we really didn’t think it could get any better. Then, in 2012, Andrew appointed Jo Nash as chief winemaker and quality went up another step. Mother of four and married to another winemaker, she's a very busy lady, but fits it all in with a big smile and has many top awards to her name. She took the much-loved Full Fifteen and added yet more layers of gorgeous flavour, all with an elegant touch. Punnets of black summer berries mingle with a seductive, smoky spice. A Big Red to pair with a rib-eye steak or a hearty casserole.
The Limestone Coast region encompasses some of Australia's most revered viticultural land and, without fail, produces reds with both voluptuous fruit and great structure. The 2022 harvest was characterised by its low cropping levels, which resulted in wines of immense power and concentration. The Ravensthorpe Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon brings together flavours of cassis, blackberry and a hint of the region's eucalypts with well-integrated toasty oak characters. A great wine to share with a hearty meal, and with careful cellaring it will continue to improve over the next 4-6 years.
Since it’s very first release, The Black Pig has fast become our No. 1 range for customers across the country. And when it comes to ripper reds, their trotters rarely stray far from McLaren Vale. Enjoy sumptuous black cherry, bramble, plum and fig tones that sing from the glass before a full-throttle palate of cassis, capsicum, menthol, chocolate and cigar box coat the palate. The tannins are ripe and approachable, and it’s oh-so ready to drink now... a classy McLaren Vale package from a premium label.
From a 25 year old single vineyard in southern Coonawarra where lower yields lead to gorgeous levels of flavour concentration. Dark blackberry and black cherry fruit aromatics, along with hints of dried mint, violet florals and some dark chocolate… the palate shows a richness of dark berry and cherry fruits, along with earthy toasted spice characters. The wine shows good structure, with fine elegant tannins and a lingering finish. “It's gorgeously composed and expressed with cassis, vanilla, roasted hazelnut and subtle tobacco aromas, followed by a wonderfully flavoursome palate delivering excellent weight and persistency. Beautifully framed by layers of fine tannins, offering both structure and impressive length... 95pts" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
