Beyond the Labels
The Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Margaret River and Tasmania are the sources of these thoroughly satisfying crisp, dry Rieslings – amazing value at a low $14.99 a bottle. Look out for Claymore’s Walk this Way and the fabulous Tassie ‘Anon’ “‘Refreshing’ doesn’t pay the wine its dues.” You'll save $54 on this six pack. But ask yourself seriously will six be enough?
The raw, rocky soils and cool summer evenings of the Clare Valley are perfectly suited to producing vibrant and refreshing white wines – just like the Fairview Ridge Riesling. This is classic lime-driven Clare Riesling with notes of kumquat, granny smith apple and bubblegum. Crisp, lively acid races toward a satisfyingly fresh finish. Alcohol at a relatively low 11.2%, makes for an approachable white easily paired with panfried garlic sea scallops or a variety of local cheeses.
A bright and lively way to start any evening. The Miles From Nowhere Riesling expresses a zest for life. Every glass takes you to the south west of Australia, where the locals relax with glass in hand watching the sun set over the ocean. The Riesling is sourced from a single vineyard located in the Wallcliffe area of the Margaret River. The vines are over 30 years old and are managed with minimal intervention Aromas of lime leaf and lemon verbena. The crisp acidity lends an austere focus to the attack. Fresh fruit, honeyed notes and lees texture add a moreish complexity.
Bright, fresh and aromatic Riesling is at its very best in Australia's cooler areas, like the beautiful Clare Valley. This refreshing example shows clean acidity, fresh lemon-rind, crisp green apples and makes a lovely apéritif. Top food partners would be simple grilled white fish, seared scallops with lime and chilli, or Thai fishcakes.
The 94pt Anon is a citrusy expression of Tasmanian Riesling with a long dry finish. It's from Tasmanian Vintners, a joint venture between Tassie businessman Rod Roberts and Fogarty Wine Group (Deep Woods, Evans & Tate, Dalwhinnie). They've attracted some extraordinary winemakers, including Marlborough-born Liam McElhinney, the former Jimmy Watson Trophy winner. Their Anon Riesling has a talc-like minerality, hints of spice and a palate awash with lime juice, lemon and apple fruit. "Refreshing' doesn't pay the wine its dues." (James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion).
The roots of Sevenhill Cellars go all the way back to the 16th century and co-founded the religious order we know today as the Jesuits. Fast forward to Adelaide in 1848, where Jesuit priestswith a group of over 100 German and Silesian migrants decided to settle amid the beautiful rolling hills of the Clare Valley and purchased 100 acres of land in 1849. Their leader named the property Sevenhill in honour of the seven hills of Rome. Today winemaker Will Shields maintains the winemaking traditions they started. The Gold-medal 95pt Inigo Riesling 2022 recently won the Trophy for Best Australian Dry White Wine at Hong Kong International. Bright aromas of lime, citrus, mineral and orange blossom. The palate is finely structured with gentle citrus and nectarine fruit flavours, crisp acidity and a clean balanced finish.
The Watervale sub-region of South Australia's Clare Valley has become synonymous with aromatic citrus and floral scented Riesling as fresh-tasting as the name Watervale sounds. The estate-grown vines which provide the fruit for the Crabtree Watervale Riesling range from 20 to 44 years old. The bouquet suggests fresh lemon and lime, touches of orange blossom and wild flowers. On the palate, the wine is perfectly balanced with a pleasant citrus backing. Will match well with a white fish ceviche. “Tingly & bright…Very smart... 92pts” (Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion). A must for Riesling lovers – and for those wondering why there are growing numbers of them.
