Beyond the Labels
Six top-quality Aussies line up to refresh you, led by a superb Adelaide Hills trio including two-Gold Excalibur from Zonte’s Footstep and 91pt Howard Vineyard Q Block “…all the marks of good-quality Sauv Blanc” (Halliday). Find beautiful Coonawarra fruit on display too (the region's whites are really shining at the moment), and there's a Quarisa favourite in the mix too.
Aromatic Aussie Sauvignon Blanc Six Pack Case contents
Zonte's Footstep ‘shining sword rising from the water’ moment wasn’t quite of Arthurian legend, but by a misty dam early one morning. The first rapier-like cut of this Sauvignon Blanc inspired their Excalibur. Perfect for sitting down with a well-chilled glass on a balmy summer’s eve, accompanying a plate of any fresh crustacean known to man. Excalibur will surely impress with its white grapefruit zest, lemon curd notes and delicate citrus blossom aromas, with tart gooseberry and mineral-like acidity. It is the perfect accomplice to just such occasions.
Charleston in Adelaide Hills is the location of Howard Vineyard's rolling 36-hectare Beautiful Valley Vineyard. They grow a many varietals here, but their best Sauvignon Blanc comes from 'Block Q'. The cool nights lock in great natural acidity and the warm days give lovely slow ripening conditions, all making the fruit vibrant and fresh. Howard Vineyard have crafted it into an attractive single vineyard wine – all free run juice, cold fermented. Ned Goodwin MW in Halliday Wine Companion notes its “ length and lingering succulence... 91pts. Great Value" and in The Real Review, Stuart Knox calls it "A very refreshing and classic example of the variety... 90pts”.
The Angaston Road Growers range is all about honouring the often unsung heroes of the wine world, the growers. It is their intimate knowledge of the local terroir, the changes of season, and the varietals they tend to that ensure the special parcels of fruit that make it to the winery are in tip-top form to make quality wines like this stunning Sauvignon Blanc. The wine recognises Rae Clark, a proud vigneron who has been working in the wine industry for around 30 years. She is a passionate advocate for improving biodiversity through sustainable vineyard practices in her home region of Coonawarra. And when it came to finding the best selection of Sauvignon Blanc for this new wine, the winemakers knew instantly to reach out to Rae. Aromas of passionfruit, pineapple and other tropical delights leap from the glass, backed up by a palate of spritely guava and gooseberry with a lively citrus finish.
The thirst for the fruit filled wines of Australia doesn't stop. So getting our hands on good value, great tasting wines with class and character has its challenges. That’s where our well-travelled scout comes in – Michael, nicknamed Mr Anderson (a reference to the Matrix movies). And with outback wineries flung far and wide it’s ideal to have a Kombi to hole up in. Meet our wine Mr Anderson, which captures all that’s great about local Sauvignon. It leaps from the glass with tropical guava and a real zip of lime. In the words of Mr Anderson, “Hot diggity dog, it tastes good!” Great on its own, it's tasty with chicken kebabs or spicy eastern dishes.
The cool, elevated vineyards of the Adelaide Hills are home to many of Australia's great Sauvignon Blanc producers. This premium region is “absolutely stuffed to the gills with winemaking royalty” (Max Allen, Crush). Here the grapes ripen slowly, developing a full varietal expression of gooseberry, passionfruit, cut grass and tropical fruit, while retaining the vibrant acidity you know and love. It's a beautiful Sauvignon Blanc able to be paired with anything you'd enjoy alfresco, from prosciutto-wrapped melon to fresh oysters under a squeeze of lemon.
John Quarisa, aka Johnny Q, is a terrific winemaker, creating wines that, like him, can be lively and highly charged. In his Caravan wine series, he likes to think of a grape that changes in style as it travels. See that here. Sauvignon Blanc, grown in Quarisa's Riverina vineyards, produce a winning wine with loads of grassy fresh zip as well as ripe tropical fruit flavours – peach, pineapple and passionfruit! He insists on night harvested grapes to ensure lots of bright fresh flavours and cool ferments them for the same reason. This wine has already won a Gold medal not long after release and we expect more awards to come – it's a fridge-door-must! Chill and enjoy as a glass solo or with spicy Thai dishes.
