Beyond the Labels
Take your tastebuds on a slightly different tour of Aussie whites beyond perhaps over-familiar varieties, and perhaps find your new favourite grape. Discover Top Trophy Trebbiano, multi-gold Viognier, Gold-winning Verdelho, an aromatic Eden Valley Gerwürz – this selection brings you a world of flavours beyond familiar fridge favourites. It rounds off with two succulent combos – Roussanne Marsanne from the Pyrenees and a Barossa Valley Semillon Fiano. At $14.99 a bottle these are terrific value.
The lotus is the symbol of purity and beauty... and the Zonte's Footstep team strive to retain these features in their highly awarded 95pt Viognier. Grown in the Fleurieu Peninsula. Their veteran vineyard of Viognier produces fruit with rich varietal flavours while retaining good acidity. Matured in neutral oak to help evolve the signature textural 'oily' character of the variety. Brilliant pale straw colour with slight green hue. Lifted aromas of varietal apricot, ginger, honeysuckle and a gentle waft of jasmine. The palate is layered and abundant with a melange of mouth-filling ripe peach and pear fruit along with classic apricot kernal. Underneath are notes of creamy nougat, blanched almond and spice complexity which provide volume and meander through to a lingering, soft and supple finish that carries a warming embrace of stem ginger.
Established in 1972, Mountadam Vineyards was founded by the late David Wynn, the first winegrower to truly recognise the potential of a cool, elevated site to produce Australian wines of great elegance and structure. He named the vineyard after his son, Adam (who in 1984 became the company winemaker). Sourced from Mountadam's western vineyard in High Eden. There, aromatic Gewürztraminer is kept cool by altitude – sitting at a height of around 550m above sea level. While the nose gives rose, musk and Turkish delight notes, the palate is more restrained, showing primarily pink lady apple and more subtle rose water and spice characters, "… excellent detail and clarity" writes Dave Brookes in The Halliday Wine Companion.
This premium vineyard in Victoria’s cool Pyrenees district was originally established to provide high quality grapes for Penfolds and Seppelts. These days its remarkable fruit is bottled under its own label, to stunning critical acclaim. It's made by Andrew Koerner (of Blue Pyrenees fame) and his talented band of winemakers and viticulturists. Glenlofty's GO range offers great value but also great accessibility with lovely moreish fruit freshness.
Take all the joy of a summer fruit salad, with the zip and zing of tropical fruit and a dash of sunshine, distil it into a wine and you will have the miracle that is Verdelho. A native of Portugal, this sumptuous grape has really made a home for itself here in Australia – winning Gold medals too, just like this Hummingbird! It’s a wine you’ll be seeing a lot more of as it makes it way onto the wine lists of the country’s best restaurants. Love a fruit-forward Chardy without any of the oak? Partial to a tropical Sav Blanc that’s a little less grassy? This is your perfect middle-ground and will definitely hit the sweet spot.
Sam Trimboli's 2022 vintage Trebbiano has hit the heights again! This time winning a Gold, Top Gold and a Trophy at the Riverina Wine Show, plus another Trophy and Gold at the Australian Inland Wine Show. Thanks to New South Wales’ hot, dry growing season, the grapes achieved serious ripeness and flavour concentration. As a finishing touch, Sam treated the wine to four months in French oak barrels. You, too, will be impressed by the wine’s ripe citrus-fruit flavours, plus the creamy/nutty nuance imparted by the oak aging. Enjoy a refreshing glass on its own or serve with Italian-inspired cuisine (like white pizza or alfredo-sauced pastas) or fresh seafood dishes.
The Marsc Wine Co. pairs up prestige vineyard sites with acclaimed winemakers all under a ‘masked label’. We can’t tell you who made this, but trust us, you’d be impressed if you knew! For top quality Australian Semillon, it's hard to beat the Barossa Valley wine region. Endless warm sunshine days and cold valley nights make the perfect conditions for achieving optimal ripeness. Instead of blending their top quality Barossa Semillon with typical Sauv Blanc, the winemaker behind this special wine has reached for a similarly aromatic, tropical and citrus-zipped white. Fiano has it all, and a brilliant textural quality which really enhances the blend.
