Situated within the traditional lands of the Taungurung people, tabilk-tabilk means ‘place of many waterholes', a name that aptly describes the abundance of the landscape. Tahbilk is a founding member of Australia’s First Families of Wine, it was also the proud recipient of James Halliday’s Winery of the Year award in 2016. Its renowned Marsanne, steely when young, silkily textured with time, are an absolute must-try, and this 2021 vintage is "… a deadset gold medal... 95pts. In the early 2000s, owners and vignerons Owen and Cassandra Inglis fell in love with the gently sloping corner of the Adelaide Hills that is now Sidewood Estate. Since then, they have won countless trophies and medals for their wines. Most recently, they won the Best Producer Trophy at the Adelaide Hills Wine Show two years in a row (2022 and 2023) plus Gold medals for this high-scoring Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc. It's a versatile wine suited to seafood, game dishes, as well as spicy Asian cuisine. "… crisp and lip-smacking... 95pts. Great Value" says James Halliday in Halliday Wine Companion. Sam Kim from Wine Orbit calls it "Pristine and fabulously aromatic… shows Granny Smith apple, rockmelon, lemon peel and white floral aromas… brilliantly vibrant and lively, offering terrific fruit purity and intensity… highly enjoyable." It didn't take much encouragement from Yarra Valley winemaker Dr John Middleton to convince TarraWarra Estate's Marc and Eva Besen to plant their first 6 hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir back in 1983. Their love of Burgundian wines also played a part. Today, a beautiful cellar door and restaurant stand on the property amid 28 hectares of vines, an extensive nature reserve, cattle grazing and a kitchen garden. The Chardonnay was selected from seven separate blocks across the property, and boasts great intensity of stone fruit flavour, a touch of citrus and underlying cashew nut flavours. Creamy texture and subtle use of oak leading to a fresh, lingering finish. A well-deserved 95pt score the result – this is a treat!
