If you're a Riesling fan, then you'll know why many wine critics nominate Rieslings like these as their favourite white varietal. You'll also know this dozen is exceptional value – hurry for this! Taste lovely lime-spiked Clare Valley beauties from top estate stars including Kilikanoon, Crabtree, and Knappstein, savour the cool elegance of Sorby Adams’s Eden Valley Jellicoe delight and last, be impressed by the dazzling Miles From Nowhere Margaret River Riesling – it’s beautiful.
It has been 90+ score after 90+ score for the 2022 vintage of Jellicoe Eden Valley Riesling. A concentrated palate with lime, sorbet and crunchy apple flavours. Serve chilled with barbequed scallops or King George Whiting. "Focused, true … lovely to drink" writes Dave Brookes in the Halliday Wine Companion. Sam Kim from Wine Orbit also gives it 95pts, calling it "… elegant, the wine shows lemon sorbet, lime cordial and crunchy apple nuances on the nose, leading to a concentrated palate displaying fine texture and stunning persistency. Superbly structured and lingering."
A bright and lively way to start any evening. The Miles From Nowhere Riesling expresses a zest for life. Every glass takes you to the south west of Australia, where the locals relax with glass in hand watching the sun set over the ocean. The Riesling is sourced from a single vineyard located in the Wallcliffe area of the Margaret River. The vines are over 30 years old and are managed with minimal intervention Aromas of lime leaf and lemon verbena. The crisp acidity lends an austere focus to the attack. Fresh fruit, honeyed notes and lees texture add a moreish complexity.
Bright, fresh and aromatic Riesling is at its very best in Australia's cooler areas, like the beautiful Clare Valley. This refreshing example shows clean acidity, fresh lemon-rind, crisp green apples and makes a lovely apéritif. Top food partners would be simple grilled white fish, seared scallops with lime and chilli, or Thai fishcakes.
“The 2022 Mort's Reserve Riesling is an interesting wine! The acidity is green, with lime inflections, but it brings with it a succulence and intensity that spears through the very heart of the fruit. It has 11% alcohol, which addresses the acid query. When I am judging at shows, there is always one wine that gets a gold from me based on the level of uncomfortability of the acid—this would get that medal. I give these because they indicate the wine will age prodigiously, and while it may not be easy drinking in the short term, it suggests a longevity that will hold it in very good stead. Lean, austere, tight and focused, it's like a spear head in flight. It almost whistles with its pace. Don't drink it this year or next. Note the drinking window.” Erin Larkin The Wine Advocate
Another Clare Valley cracker from the Watervale sub-region. Bright and juicy single vineyard Riesling brimming with zesty lemon characters and pink grapefruit with hints of orange blossom and lemongrass. Well balanced and super refreshing. It received 94pts and a red star for exceptional value from Mike Bennie at the Halliday Wine Companion, who notes it is," … loaded with tart, lemony citrus" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit loves its "brilliantly focused palate displaying poise and linear mouthfeel. Captivating and engaging. 96pts"., while Gabrielle Poy in The Real Review sums it up by saying "This is beautifully balanced with crystalline precision. 95pts".
The Watervale sub-region of South Australia's Clare Valley has become synonymous with aromatic citrus and floral scented Riesling as fresh-tasting as the name Watervale sounds. The estate-grown vines which provide the fruit for the Crabtree Watervale Riesling range from 20 to 44 years old. The bouquet suggests fresh lemon and lime, touches of orange blossom and wild flowers. On the palate, the wine is perfectly balanced with a pleasant citrus backing. Will match well with a white fish ceviche. “Tingly & bright…Very smart... 92pts” (Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion). A must for Riesling lovers – and for those wondering why there are growing numbers of them.
