“Chardonnay is unquestionably the world’s finest dry white wine” (Scotland on Sunday)... “unbeatable” (The Observer)... “one of the world’s greatest grape varieties” (The Times). We agree! And these beauties from top estates – Willow Bridge in WA, Mountadam, Dandelion Vineyards, Jim Brand and Zonte’s Footstep in South Australia, and Hungerford Hill in the Hunter Valley – show off this wonderful variety in all its layered, textured, complex glory. Enjoy them here in a top shelf dozen you simply won’t want to share with anyone else.
Jim Brand was a deeply passionate Coonawarra winemaker and vigneron who was born into the third generation of an Australian winemaking dynasty. Today, the family continue Jim’s legacy by crafting premium Coonawarra wines which reflect Jim Brand's drive, passion and endless pursuit for quality. The striking 93pt Yates Chardonnay is the perfect example of well known Cabernet regions, like Coonawarra, being home to equally impressive Chardonnay. A perfumed nose combines peach and stone fruit aromas with creamy buttery and vanillin oak characters. The palate is complex, smooth and rounded with a balanced acid structure. It displays strong peach and nectarine accompanied by creamy cashew nuts from barrel fermentation and maturation. Lingering fruit flavours last well after the last sip. "Elegant and stylish, the inviting bouquet shows ripe apricot, lemon pith, nougat and roasted cashew aromas, followed by a beautifully weighted palate displaying refined texture backed by bright acidity. Splendidly harmonious with complexity, offering fabulous drinking... 93pts" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
Whole bunches of Dandelion Vineyard's best Adelaide Hills Chardonnay were hand picked in the cool of twilight to retain fresh, racing acidity and gorgeous fruit aromas. The free run juice is fermented in stainless steel tanks before spending 9 months in new and first use French oak barriques. The resulting Chardonnay is citrussy, with white peach, nectarine, melon and pear fruit flavours, nderpinned by layers of almond-like pastry and a textural minerality. "An inviting, pale chardonnay, with a subdued nose of melon, white peach, apple pastries and almondy oak. The palate is smooth and seamless with juicy balance and measured barrel influence. It's lifted by tight acidity, emphasising its relatively light, low alcohol personality. The finish is long and mouth-watering... 92pts" (Ralph Kyte-Powell, The Real Review).
Full flavoured, complex and textural 94pt Chardonnay from 5 Red Star Halliday-rated Willow Bridge. Grown on two distinct blocks situated on a picturesque hillside of the Ferguson Valley in WA's Geographe wine region. The winemakers have undertaken minimal techniques to allow a fuller expression of site, varietal and, more specifically, the famous Gingin Chardonnay clone. Juicy white peach, lively citrus, blossom, cinnamon and almond notes introduce a palate alive with cleansing minerality and supported by a backbone of tight grain French oak. "More delicate yes, but still with the power and drive of previous years... 94pts" (Ray Jordan). This is the type of wine you'd want greeting you at your beachside AirBNB or on the wine list of a high end restaurant.
Zonte’s Footstep wines are hugely popular with both wine drinkers, critics and show judges alike. And once you’ve tasted one of their wines, you soon see why. As UK writer Matthew Jukes says, “Zonte’s Footstep wines are not ‘old world’, nor even ‘new world’, Zonte’s is out of this world!” The juicy, rounded – and exclusive – 93pt Zonte's Footstep Cream Puff Chardonnay is grown in the Adelaide Hills. The cool climate fruit is ripe with yellow stone fruit, melon and citrus characters. Choux pastry notes, light baking spice and a subtle creamy palate inspire the name. "Wonderfully composed and expressed, the wine shows ripe nectarine, lemon peel, cedar and brioche characters on the nose, leading to a beautifully rounded palate that's succulent and supple. Well balanced by juicy acidity, offering terrific drinking... 93pts" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
Grown along the banks of the Hunter River this Chardonnay hails from the oldest continually operating vineyard in Australia, Dalwood. First planted by George Wyndham in 1828 this vineyard is a piece of living history that continues in this wine. The 2022 lures you in with spicy pineapple, peach and green mango aromas. A melding of tangy lemon and cashew nut flavours fill the palate, with crisp acidity giving a refreshing finish. Richness without high alcohol. "Light and bright straw yellow. Nectarine and reductive aromatics on the nose. Grapefruit pith, sea salt and struck flint notes run tightly bound through the core of the palate, ample power here with equal parts acidity to drive it. Good length and crisp to the end, time will be on your side here... 92pts" (Stuart Knox, The Real Review).
Sourced from the Porter family, Adelaide Hills growers who have worked with Corryton Burge for years. The family's Chardonnay was matured in a mix of new and used oak for 6 months. Weekly battonage helped create a full and creamy mouthfeel and balance out the acidity. Striking aromas of cashew and peach open up to a palate of white peach and stone fruit. There is a subtle creaminess with toasty oak supported by a mineral acid line maintaining freshness and complexity, the palate finishes with hints of biscuit and oyster shell and a touch of flint. "Pale straw in the glass with aromas of ripe nectarine, white peach and grapefruit, cut through with hints of soft spice, lemon curd, nougat, almond paste and meal. There's a little bit of texture and creaminess on the palate, with softly-spoken spicy oak joining the fray and a dry, stony aspect to the mealy nectarine/peach fruits on the finish" (Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion).
