Gold Medal Whites & Reds 24-bottle BULK DEAL Case contents
With origins in Spain and southern France, where he still regularly distinguishes himself, this impressive figure first set foot here in 1840 and today also calls South Australia home. The Governor General may have been around a while but has an eye to the future. He mixes effortlessly, but is bold enough to stand alone. Possessed of great potential strength and power, he more often displays his lighter side, with seductive charm and finesse. For many, his approachable style is very refreshing, and even at his most chilled, you’ll always receive a warm welcome.
“Leap-from-the-glass” aromatics of gooseberries, lemons and limes dance against a grassy herbal background. A rush of Granny Smith apple peel crispness with tart guava, and lemon curd. A tangy after palate, mouth-watering finish and trademark Sauvignon Blanc acidity. Flavoursome and fine finish with crisp lines of cleansing acid. Excalibur Sauvignon Blanc is an exciting, fresh, food-friendly white wine. Perfect match to seafood. "Pristine and beautifully lifted on the nose showing Granny Smith apple, dried herb, white floral and lime peel aromas. The palate delivers juicy fruit intensity with lively acidity, finishing lingering and delightfully crisp-dry... 92pts" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
A tuly tirmphant vintage for this global bestseller, with a Gold, Double Gold, AND a Trophy to boot. David Joeky marries deep, black Durif and smooth spicy Shiraz to produce a darker, denser, profound red. As he says: “Magical things happen when Shiraz and Durif come together” . His Dark Corner bears that out to delicious perfection. The result? It's almost as dark as the corner in which it was made, a wine to stain your palate, and once tasted, you’ll be hooked. Ripe and mouthfilling, with blackberry, plum berry fruit and mocha flavours with a smooth, creamy texture.
Q Malbec. The Q stands for Quarisa. John Quarisa. He’s the man dubbed a "magician” by James Halliday because quite how he crafts such full flavoured, amazing value for money South Australian reds leaves some scratching their heads and others standing up in applause. Bright intense red with purple hues. Flavours of blueberries, also classic Malbec mulberry, red cherries and notes of cedar; cocoa and wafts of violets too. Generous and sensual, and through its structure remains rich and lush. Always a winner at barbecues, Q Malbec teams is also a treat with a wide range of hearty dishes, but is certainly smooth enough to enjoy sipped without food too.
The Clare Valley's dynamic Claymore Wines celebrates a love of wine, music and football (of the round ball type). Their labels celebrate some of the winemaker's favourite albums and songs. "This label, true to its musical roots, represents a regional collaboration with local Clare Valley grape grower partners to showcase our region's Queen at its best. This regional blend comprises selected parcels from both our Estate Watervale Riesling vineyards along with parcels from Auburn and Sevenhill." A delicious Riesling that's won Gold and 94pts. "Youthfully charming and elegantly fragrant, the bouquet shows Gala apple, lemon zest and white floral aromas, followed by a juicy palate offering bright fruit flavours with fine texture and firm acidity, finishing refreshing and lingering" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
The many fans of Kevin Mitchell's hugely popular Baroota will wonder if Baroota can get any bigger? and better. Yes it can! The first release of this wine was a '10th Anniversary Limited Release' a couple of years ago and is a step up from the Baroota Reserve. Made as a premium win – more select premium frui, newer oak, greater finesse... it has proven itself to be extremely popular and has been made as a “Limited Release” ever since. Enjoy its "Generous nose combining redcurrants, mixed spices, liquorice and toasty notes. Velvety, full-bodied and robust on the palate, with powerful sunny aromas to which moderate freshness adds relief. Firm, spicy finish. 90pts, Double Gold" (International Challenge Gilbert & Gaillard).
This wine may be inspired by the Italian town of Sorrento, but it was grown in McLaren Vale, and shows all the big, rich dark fruit and chocolate intensity of a classic McLaren Vale Shiraz – the kind that won Steve Maglieri the title of ‘Bushing King’ (three times!), plus Trophies for Best Shiraz in the Great Australian Wine Challenge, and Best Shiraz and Red Wine of the Year at the London International Wine Challenge. And the kind that won winemaker Charles Whish a Jimmy Watson Trophy! "It's wonderfully ripe and perfumed on the nose with black/blueberry, violet, mixed spice and toasted nut aromas, followed by a generously expressed palate offering terrific fruit purity backed by silky texture and grainy tannins. Well structured and robust with a lengthy sturdy finish... 94pts" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
John Quarisa, aka Johnny Q, is a terrific winemaker, creating wines that, like him, can be lively and highly charged. In his Caravan wine series, he likes to think of a grape that changes in style as it travels. See that here. Sauvignon Blanc, grown in Quarisa's Riverina vineyards, produce a winning wine with loads of grassy fresh zip as well as ripe tropical fruit flavours – peach, pineapple and passionfruit! He insists on night harvested grapes to ensure lots of bright fresh flavours and cool ferments them for the same reason. This wine has already won a Gold medal not long after release and, given Johnny's record, you wouldn't be surprised if there were more to come for this fridge-door-must! Chill and enjoy as a glass solo or with spicy Thai dishes.
The Hamelin Bay vineyard was established by the Drake-Brockman family. Regional pioneers, Richard Drake-Brockman’s great-grandmother, Grace Bussell, was famous for rescuing shipwreck survivors in 1876, aged 16. Today the winery has a commitment to quality, sustainability, and showcasing the unique characteristics of the region. This classic Margaret River Semillon Sauvignon Blanc (SSB) blend has two Golds. Expect aromas of cut grass and passion fruit, and a refreshing palate with balanced citrus flavours.
Allegiance Wines was founded by Tim Cox, whose love of wine and allegiance to the grape has seen him create a range of outstanding (and critically acclaimed) wines from premium regions around the country. For him, it’s all about producing the highest quality wines from premium parcels of fruit he sources. This Reserve level Cabernet Sauvignon illustrates beautifully Coonawarra affinity for Cabernet. Sauvignon “…the bouquet has a touch of eucalypt forest-floor, violet and ginger…” Show judges and Sam Kim are fans too: “Exhibiting stunning fruit purity with elegant complexity, the wine shows blackcurrant, tobacco, cured meat and cedar characters on the nose. The palate is equally impressive with excellent concentration and persistency, splendidly framed by fine, grainy tannins, making it firmly structured and robust, yet silky and lingering. 95pts.” (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
Sisters Jane Richards and Claire Davies are part of a SA farming family. While Jane took a path through the corporate world in the US, Claire stayed in South Australia attending the famous Roseworthy College, and they came together in 2002 to set up Eight at the Gate in Wrattonbully. The name is a reference to the eight children they have between them! Multi award winning Peter Douglas, once a senior winemaker with Wynns Coonawarra Estate, heads the winemaking team. This Gris is luscious and refreshing somewhat half way in style between Gris and Grigio, but very satisfying to everyone! As the Gold and scores of 95 and 93pts might suggest.
Moonlighters captures the very essence of the RedHeads concept. Right at the beginning, when RedHeads started in the McLaren Vale, a handful of dedicated, rule-breaking, young winemakers, with a day job at the big corporations, would arrive at RedHeads studio early evening, down a cold beer, then start on crafting a ‘real’ wine, with all the unbridled passion you’d expect from the newly qualified winemaking elite. The RedHeads Moonlighters White is a beautiful blend of rich Chardonnay and aromatic Viognier, with a full nose featuring struck match characters and summer stone fruit. The textured palate hints at apricot nectar, spice and subtle nutty notes, balanced by a mouthwatering acidity.
