The Leconfield Coonawarra estate was established in 1974 by noted oenologist, Sydney Hamilton, uncle of Dr. Richard Hamilton, of Richard Hamilton wines. The Hamilton family have a family tradition in winemaking dating back to South Australia’s first vineyard and winery in 1837. At the age of 76 with a career spanning nearly 60 years, Sydney yearned to make a classic Australian Cabernet. He selected Coonawarra to fulfil his dream, and began to plant his vineyard and built his winery. He named it Leconfield, after an English ancestor, Lord Leconfield.
