The Ben Schild Reserve is the culmination of the estate’s Angus Brae vineyard Shiraz and a carefully selection of French, American and Hungarian oak. In the Barossa, vines over 70 years old are known as ‘Survivor’ vines. The Welland vines are survivors in more ways than one, having narrowly escape being bulldozed for development. The vineyard was planted in 1923 by the Krieg family, in Nuriootpa, in the heart of the Barossa Valley. Over the years, much of the original vineyard and orchard had been cleared and developed. When the last remaining hectares of this historic nearly 100-year-old vineyard were listed for sale as a potential development site, a group of friends came together to purchase it, saving an important part of Barossa history. The Welland estate was born, and now produces world class Barossa reds - like this one. It combines fruit from the Barossa’s two valleys – the Barossa Valley and Eden Valleys to create a lush and powerful Barossa Shiraz.
