WineFolio - David Walker Bell
Puglia produces terrific, big, spicy reds and La Fonte d’Oro, made from semi-dried Primitivo and Negroamaro (Puglia’s hero grapes), is especially so.
La Fonte d'Oro's built up quite a fan club since it first arrived in 2008. It's a velvet smooth red packed with black fruit flavour thanks to some brilliantly creative winemaking, courtesy of the fabulously talented Simone Cortese. He knew that by drying the finest Negroamaro and Primitivo grapes, two Puglian varieties that ooze dense, ripe fruit character, he’d concentrate their flavours even more. Of course this is a costly way to make wine (which is why famous Amarone starts at around £20), but the results are impressive. After two weeks’ drying, the grapes are pressed, extracting super rich, flavourpacked juice. Six months ageing in oak adds layers of vanilla and spice to the wine's dark, ripe fruit. Decant and serve with a rich stew.

Mundus Vini London Wine Competition
From a hot vintage which has surprised all with its intense, vivacious wines, this is a well-priced Barolo. It was made at a 4th-generation family cel
Grape grower Natale Seghesio is known as 'il Poeta' ('the Poet') to his friends. Not only for his lyrical compositions (featured on the label), but also for the intensely flavoured produce of his vines, growing in the premium Piedmont hills. Talented winemaker Paolo Sartirano snaps up Natale's grapes every year, taking them to his family's cellar. Founded in 1871, this cellar is now 150 years old and today in the hands of the fourth generation. Paolo has crafted Il Poeta to be a truly poetical expression of the finest Nebbiolo. Three years ageing in oak ensures the fruit marries perfectly with silky, toasted spice character. Deeply flavoured and complex, the wine is best opened early and decanted. Serve in large glasses with hearty dishes.

Etna Rosso wines are prized for their wonderful layers of nuanced flavour and ability to age. This is a terrific red from a tiny cellar, mindful of th
Mount Etna is the highest and most active volcano in Europe. Any grape grower knows not to plant their vines in one single block, because you don't know where the next eruption will blast from! Winemaker Filipe Mangione says "Everything is so intense here – the nature, volcano, soils and climate. Yet he wouldn't choose anywhere else to be a grower or a winemaker. His vines lie at 700 metres altitude, so the grapes don't only ripen beautifully, they retain lifted aromas and a freshness that allows his wines to age. The Nerellos are the speciality grapes here – Mascalese and Cappuccio – they lend the wines their unique herbal red fruit and vibrant edge. Elegant wild herb fruit and freshness. A great choice to cut through richer dishes.
