From the southern end of New Zealand's North Island (near Wellington), the Martinborough wine region is well know for its high quality and much sought-after Pinot Noir, like this one from Palliser Estate. 38% of the fruit comes from their Clouston Vineyard, 60% from Pencarrow, and the balance from their other top performing estate vineyards. Leads with aromas of tart strawberry and red currant, with violets, cloves and vanilla in the background. Delicate fruit-driven style, with touches of savouriness; silky tannins and gentle acidity. Decant for an hour before drinking. "Early release pinot noir with gentle floral, violet, black cherry, raspberry, anise, spice and subtle fresh herb flavours. A charming, accessible, simple, easy-drinking wine" (Bob Campbell, The Real Review)... "Sweetly fruited and youthfully charming, the wine shows red cherry, plum, floral and subtle spice notes on the nose, leading to a beautifully rounded palate that's supple and succulent. It's elegantly flavoursome and soothing with a lengthy juicy finish... 91pts" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).

There’s a beautiful freshness to The Dagger. Sweet cherries and mulberries dominate the nose, but there’s more if you linger: violets, roses and mushrooms too. Pristine red fruits fill your mouth, wrapped in a silky smooth veil. Knappstein makes The Dagger without oak – his goal is to show what fresh, unadulterated pinot tastes like. He succeeds! 93pts from Wine Orbit’s Sam Kim. Drink now.

Like a good Pinot should, the Sea Glass reveals more and more as you linger over it (so take it slow!). Cherries and raspberry aromas come first, with just a hint of fresh roses in the background. More savoury characters emerge: almonds, thyme and olive brine. The palate melds fruit and savouriness together in a silky, mouthfilling flow of flavour that lingers on. The wine has been matured using 45% new French oak, bringing extra depth and structure without swamping the fruit. There’s a finesse and balance to this wine that speaks to its high-quality. 95pts from Wine Orbit.

The Hirsch Hill Estate was originally set up to breed thoroughbred horses... today it also makes thoroughbred wines as well. Their Pinot is silky rich
Savoury style of Pinot. You’ll find dark cherries and almonds on the nose, leading to a restrained palate of raspberries, plum skins and earthiness. Good structure to this wine. Crafted by well known Yarra winemaker Rob Dolan; matured in new (30%) and seasoned French hogsheads for nine months prior to bottling. “Beautifully ripe and inviting, the bouquet shows Black Doris plum, dark cherry, mixed spice, thyme and almond characters. The palate displays attractive fruit, intensity and persistency combined with fine texture and polished tannins, finishing silky and lingering.” (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
