Under the leadership of Andrew and Neil, the Pikes estate grew to more than 100 hectares and now features more than 20 different varieties, including Savagnin, Albariño, Nero d’avola, Fiano, Montepulciano and Tempranillo. Los Compañeros is Spanish for ‘The Companions’ as Shiraz and Tempranillo really do keep great company. A wine that really is greater than the sum of its parts. Delicious on release, it is meant to be consumed in its youth. Perfect blending companions, Tempranillo provides aromatic lift and a rustic textural element to the soft richness of the Shiraz. No new oak here, so the fruit really sings.

Pikes was established in 1985 by the Pike brothers Neil (winemaker) and Andrew (viticulturist) and they built it into a very well regarded estate. Neil retired recently, but Andrew and the next generation (the 6th) continue the tradition of crafting very fine wines. “It seduces with its upfront primary fruit; all blackberries, red plums and raspberries. But there’s more. A flurry of oak flavour - mostly smoky, charry - yet balanced as there’s also red licorice, basil and star anise in the mix. An unpretentious, delicious drink...92pts. Great Value” (Halliday Wine Companion, Jane Faulkner). To 2025.

Lovers of big reds know that South Australia's beautiful Clare Valley is home to some of the richest, deepest, inkiest, distinctive and voluminous red
The Pike brothers established Pikes winery in the Polish Hill sub-region of the Clare Valley in 1984, renovating an old stone shearing shed to house their winery and cellar door. Neil is the veteran winemaker (he’s done 38 vintages in Clare); Andrew the seasoned viticulturist (he spent 22 years working for big names like Wynn’s Coonawarra and Southcorp before establishing Pikes). Together they turn out formidable wines that earn plenty of show medals and critical acclaim. Their richly textured 2019 'Wilfred's Block' really is magnificent. A definitive Australian blend of inky, slatey Cabernet and sumptuous, spicy Shiraz, it’s a contemplative wine – the layers of flavour will reveal themselves slowly – and perfect for winter sipping. It will cellar well until 2032, but is still drinking beautifully now. Decant, pour into big glasses, and savour with good food and good friends.
