Garganega is a rather obscure variety. Light, crisp and refreshing examples can be found throughout Italy, but it's at its most exciting in Soave. Here, it produces anything from 70-100% of the blend, the remainder tending to be Trebbiano and/or Chardonnay.

Good wines are made particularly in the Soave Classico region, but producers like Pieropan have in the past few years spearheaded a renaissance of fine wines using the grape. Many of these are lightly oaked and show viscous texture, almond flavors and vibrant fruit qualities, making great partners to risottos, seafood and white meat. Garganega also produces the sweet Recioto Soave wines.
